Types of Clothing Fabric

Posted by Admin | 18 May
When it comes to fabric, there are many different types. Textile fibres can be either natural or synthetic and they are often mixed together into blends that offer specific desirable properties.
Once the raw materials are converted into yarn they are ready for weaving. This is done on a machine called a loom.
Satin
Satin is a luxurious fabric that can be used for dressmaking. It can be woven from silk, polyester or rayon. Its lustrous finish makes it a popular choice for wedding dresses and other formal clothing.
Satin can easily snag on barbed needles or other rough surfaces, so it’s important to check your sewing tools and work area for rough spots before working with this fabric. It also shows oil stains very easily.
Silk
Silk is a luxurious fabric that is used to make dresses, skirts and blouses. It’s also used for accessories like scarves and ties. Its luster, smooth texture and different colors make it a great choice for elegant attire.
There are a lot of different kinds of silk. Some are more durable than others. Others have a more casual look and feel. Some are woven with intricate patterns that shimmer in the light. Others have a nubby texture that looks like watermarks.
Suede
Suede is a fabric that is soft on the skin and feels luxurious. It’s also lightweight and drapable, making it ideal for dresses, skirts and pants. It can be hemmed with either a fused or turned hem. To prevent bulk, a turned hem should be trimmed to the stitching line.
Named for the gloves it originally made, suede can be made from any animal skin. Its consistency is affected by the age of the hide. Calves, for example, develop softer and lighter hides than older cows. It is often used for accessories like handbags and shoes.
Linen
Linen is a popular clothing fabric that has been used throughout history. People use it for its breathability, making it a great choice for warm climates. Linen is also a natural fiber and is environmentally friendly.
Typically, linen is made from flax plant fibers. The longer fibers make the fabric thicker and stiffer, but they also allow it to breathe easily. It can be difficult to maintain, however, since it wrinkles and needs to be ironed.
While cotton is a staple for many wardrobes, linen remains a favorite for those who are looking for something breathable and stylish. It is a good choice for summer, fall or any vacation to a tropical destination!
It is a warp-based knit fabric that is woven on flat knitting machines. The lengthwise threads, or warp, are formed into loops and interwoven with weft threads to create a rib pattern on the front of the fabric and a crosswise rib on the back.
Velvet
Velvet has a unique, soft feel that makes it great for clothes. Its unique texture also enhances the visual allure of velvet-designed home decor.
Like cotton and silk, velvet is a woven tufted fabric. However, unlike these other fabrics, velvet threads are cut to create the short raised loops of its pile.
The fabric can be woven from a variety of materials, including silk (which is the traditional choice), wool, cotton, and synthetic fibers such as rayon. Cotton velvet or plain velvet is the most common blend and may include a small percentage of spandex increasing its stretchability.
PVC
PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a synthetic material often used to make raincoats and other types of protective clothing. Its resistance to dirt, chemicals, mildew, and general abrasion makes it ideal for working clothes.
It also has a natural sheen, making it easy to work with and attractive to wear. This versatility has made it a popular choice for gothic and rave-inspired fashion.
Although not as environmentally friendly as PU, virgin PVC does release dioxins during production and processing. Fortunately, some manufacturers are using recycled PVC to make their products.
